For a tangent lx+my=1 to a2x2−b2y2=1: a2l2−b2m2=1. Since L2 (through the origin, perpendicular to L1) has direction along (l,m), the intersection point P=(x,y) satisfies l=x2+y2x,m=x2+y2y.
Substituting: a2x2−b2y2=(x2+y2)2, i.e. (x2+y2)2=16x2−4y2.
\[\alpha=16,\ \beta=-4,\qquad \alpha+\beta=12.\]
