Question 2 of 298MediumMCQ
Let P=θ∈[0,4π]:tan2θ=1 and S=a∈Z:2(cos8θ−sin8θ)sec2θ=a2,θ∈P. Then n(S) is:

\[2(\cos^8\theta-\sin^8\theta)\sec2\theta = 2(\cos^4\theta+\sin^4\theta)(\cos^2\theta+\sin^2\theta)(\cos^2\theta-\sin^2\theta)\sec2\theta\]
\[= 2(\cos^4\theta+\sin^4\theta)\cos2\theta\sec2\theta = 2(\cos^4\theta+\sin^4\theta) = 2\left(1-\tfrac12\sin^22\theta\right) = a^2\]
So a2=2−sin22θ∈[1,2]. Since a is an integer, a2 must be a perfect square lying in [1,2], forcing a2=1, which requires sin22θ=1, i.e. 2θ=(2n+1)2π, so θ=(2n+1)4π.
But at such θ, tanθ=±1, i.e. tan2θ=1 --- which is excluded from P. Hence no θ∈P produces an integer value of a, so S=∅ and n(S)=0.
