Let A(1,0),B(2,−1) and C(37,34) be three points. If the equation of the bisector of the angle ABC is αx+βy=5, then the value of α2+β2 is:
Solutions · 1
Official solution
Line AB: through (1,0),(2,−1): y=−(x−1)⟹L1:x+y−1=0.
Line BC: through (2,−1),(37,34): slope =7/3−24/3+1=7⟹L2:7x−y−15=0.
At B(2,0)-test: L1(2,0)=1,L2(2,0)=−1, opposite signs, so the bisector of ∠ABC (the region containing the interior) uses the negative sign:
\[\frac{x+y-1}{\sqrt{2}} = -\frac{7x-y-15}{\sqrt{50}}\]
\[5x+5y-5 = -(7x-y-15) \implies 12x+4y-20=0 \implies 3x+y=5\]
So α=3,β=1, giving α2+β2=9+1=10.
