Official solution
Let Sn=∑k=1nak=αn2+βna1+a2+a3+a4+…an=αn2+βn
Since the sum Sn is a quadratic expression in n with no constant term then the sequence ak is in A.P (arithmetic progression).
Then nth term of the sequence can be found using the formula
an=Sn−Sn−1an=αn2+βn−[α(n−1)2+β(n−1)]=αn2+βn−[α(n2−2n+1)+βn−β]=αn2+βn−αn2+2αn−α−βn+β⇒an=β−α+2αn−(1)
It is given that a10=59, substitute n=10 in equation (1).
a10=β−α+2α(10)=59⇒19α+β=59−(2)
also, a6=7a1 (given)
substitute n=6 and n=1 in equation (1).
β−α+2α(6)=7(β−α+2α(1))⇒11α+β=7α+7β⇒4α=6β⇒2α=3β⇒α=23β
Substitute α=23β in equation (2)
19(23β)+β=59⇒57β+2β=118⇒59β=118⇒β=59118=2
And α=23β=23×2=3
So, value of α+β=3+2=5.
