If the system of equations :
x+y+z=5x+2y+3z=9x+3y+λz=μ
has infinitely many solutions, then the value of λ+μ is :
Solutions · 1
Official solution
D=λ−5D1=λ+μ−18D2=4λ−2μ+6D3=μ−13x=DD1;y=DD2;z=DD3
For the system to have infinitely many solutions, the determinant of the coefficient matrix and all the corresponding determinants must be zero.
D=D1=D2=D3=0
First, set D=0:
λ−5=0⇒λ=5
Next, set D3=0:
μ−13=0⇒μ=13
Now check D1=0 using λ=5 and μ=13:
λ+μ−18=5+13−18=0
Also check D2=0:
4λ−2μ+6=4(5)−2(13)+6=20−26+6=0
So the values are consistent. Therefore,
∴λ+μ=5+13=18
