Let A=I2−2MMT, where M is a real matrix of order 2×1 such that MTM=I1. If λ is a real number such that AX=λX holds for some non-zero real matrix X of order 2×1, then the sum of squares of all possible values of λ is equal to:

Since MTM=1 (a scalar), A=I−2MMT is a Householder reflection matrix: it satisfies AT=A and A2=I−4MMT+4M(MTM)MT=I−4MMT+4MMT=I, so A2=I.
Hence every eigenvalue λ of A satisfies λ2=1, i.e. λ=±1. Since A=±I in general (it's a genuine reflection, M=0), both eigenvalues 1 and −1 occur.
Sum of squares of all possible λ: 12+(−1)2=2.
