If the system of equations
\[x+y+z=5,\qquad x+2y+3z=9,\qquad x+3y+\lambda z=\mu\]
has infinitely many solutions, then the value of λ+μ is:
Solutions · 1
Official solution
Using Cramer's determinants: D=λ−5, D1=λ+μ−18, D2=4λ−2μ+6, D3=μ−13. For infinitely many solutions, all of D,D1,D2,D3 must vanish.
D=0⇒λ=5. D3=0⇒μ=13.
Checking: D1=λ+μ−18=5+13−18=0 , and D2=4(5)−2(13)+6=20−26+6=0 . Consistent.
So λ+μ=5+13=18.
