Let α,β∈R be such that the system of linear equations
\[x+2y+z=5,\qquad 2x+y+\alpha z=5,\qquad 8x+4y+\beta z=18\]
has no solution. Then αβ is equal to:
Solutions · 1
Official solution
For the system to have no solution, the coefficient determinant must vanish:
\[\Delta=\begin{vmatrix}1&2&1\\2&1&\alpha\\8&4&\beta\end{vmatrix}=\beta-4\alpha-4\beta+16\alpha=0 \Rightarrow \beta=4\alpha.\]
Substituting β=4α, the third equation becomes 8x+4y+4αz=18, which is exactly 4 times the second equation 2x+y+αz=5 on the left side --- giving 4×5=20 on the left, but the right side is 18=20. So the system is indeed inconsistent (no solution) for any such α=0, confirming β=4α.
So αβ=4.
