Let α,β∈R be such that the system of linear equations
x+2y+z2x+y+αz8x+4y+βz=5=5=18
has no solution. Then αβ is equal to :
Solutions · 1
Official solution
x+2y+z=52x+y+αz=58x+4y+βz=18
For a system of three linear equations to have no solution, it is necessary that the coefficient matrix be singular, i.e. its determinant is zero: Δ=0.
Δ=∣12121α84β∣=0Δ=1(β−4α)−2(2β−8α)+1(0)=0=β−4α−4β+16α=0⇒4α=β
Now substitute β=4α in the third equation. Then the left side of the third equation becomes 8x+4y+4αz, which is exactly 4 times the left side of the second equation 2x+y+αz.
But the constants do not match: 4×5=20, whereas the third equation has 18. So we get 4×(2x+y+αz)=20 but 8x+4y+4αz=18, which is a contradiction. Hence, the system is inconsistent and has no solution.
Therefore, αβ=α4α=4.
