g(x)=∣x∣[x2] is discontinuous wherever x2 passes through an integer value (a jump point of the greatest integer function), within (−2,2) i.e. x2<4: these are x2=1,2,3, giving
\[S=\{-1,\,1,\,-\sqrt{2},\,\sqrt{2},\,-\sqrt{3},\,\sqrt{3}\}\]
Now compute f(x)=min{2x,x2} at each point:
- f(−1)=min(−2,1)=−2
- f(1)=min(2,1)=1
- f(−2)=min(−2,2)=−2
- f(2)=min(2,2)=2
- f(−3)=min(−6,3)=−6
- f(3)=min(6,3)=6
\[\sum_{x\in S}f(x)=(-\sqrt{2}+1)+(-2+2)+(-\sqrt{6}+\sqrt{6})=1-\sqrt{2}\]
