Let f and g be two functions defined by f(x)={x+1,∣x−1∣,x<0x≥0 and g(x)={x+1,1,x<0x≥0. Then (g∘f)(x) is:

Rewriting f: f(x)=⎩⎨⎧x+1,1−x,x−1,x<00≤x<1x≥1
\[g(f(x))={f(x)+1,1,f(x)<0f(x)≥0\]
f(x)<0 only when x+1<0, i.e. x<−1 (checking each branch, this is the only region where f(x) is negative). So
\[g(f(x))={x+2,1,x<−1x≥−1\]
This is continuous everywhere (both pieces agree at x=−1: x+2→1), but the derivative jumps from 1 (left) to 0 (right) at x=−1, so g∘f is not differentiable exactly at x=−1 --- one point.
