Let A=tan−1x∈(−2π,2π), B=cot−1x, with A+B=2π. Then
\[A^3+B^3=(A+B)\left[(A+B)^2-3AB\right]=\frac{\pi}{2}\left[\frac{\pi^2}{4}-3AB\right],\qquad AB=A\left(\frac{\pi}{2}-A\right).\]
As A ranges over (−2π,2π), AB ranges over (−2π2,16π2] (maximum at A=4π).
\[k=\frac{1}{2\pi^2}\left[\frac{\pi^2}{4}-3AB\right]\cdot\frac{1}{\pi}\cdot\pi = \frac18-\frac{3AB}{2\pi^2}.\]
- At AB=16π2: k=81−323=321.
- As AB→−2π2: k→81+43=87 (not attained, since A→−2π is excluded).
So k∈[321,87).
