Question 80 of 162MediumMCQ
If f(x)+2f(x1)=3x,x=0, and S={x∈R:f(x)=f(−x)}; then S:
Solutions · 1
Official solution
We have, f(x)+2f(x1)=3x,x=0
… (i)
On replacing x by x1 in the above equation, we get
\[
⇒f(x1)+2f(x)=x32f(x)+f(x1)=x3...(ii)
\]
On multiplying Eq. (ii) by 2, we get
\[
4 f(x)+2 f\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)=\frac{6}{x}\quad...(iii)
\]
and subtracting Eq. (i) from Eq. (iii), we get
\[[4 f(x)+2 f\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)] - [f(x)+2 f\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)]=\frac{6}{x} - 3x\]
⇒3f(x)=x6−3x
⇒f(x)=x2−x
Now, consider f(x)=f(−x)
\[
⇒x2−x=−x2+x⇒x4=2x⇒2x2=4⇒x2=2⇒x=±2
\]
Hence, S contains exactly two elements.
