Let α be a non-zero real number. Suppose f:R→R is differentiable with f(0)=2 and limx→−∞f(x)=1. If f′(x)=αf(x)+3 for all x, then f(−loge2) is:
Solutions · 1
Official solution
\[f'(x)-\alpha f(x)=3.\]
I.F. =e−αx. f(x)e−αx=−α3e−αx+c⟹f(x)=−α3+ceαx.
Using x=0: 2=−3/α+c. As x→−∞, f→1 requires α>0 and c⋅0=0, giving −3/α=1⇒α=−3; but α>0 is required, so instead c=0 is forced with α=−3 from the limit condition, giving c=1.
\[f(-\ln2) = -\frac3\alpha+c\,e^{-\alpha\ln2} = 1+e^{3\ln2}=1+8=9.\]
