By the binomial theorem for (a+b)5+(a−b)5=2[(05)a5+(25)a3b2+(45)ab4] with a=x,b2=x3−1:
\[\left(x+\sqrt{x^3-1}\right)^5+\left(x-\sqrt{x^3-1}\right)^5 = 2\left[x^5+10x^3(x^3-1)+5x(x^3-1)^2\right]\]
\[=2\left(5x^7+10x^6+x^5-10x^4-10x^3+5x\right)\]
So α=10 (coeff of x7), β=2 (coeff of x5), γ=−20 (coeff of x3), δ=10 (coeff of x).
The equations become: 10u+2v=18⇒5u+v=9, and −20u+10v=20⇒−2u+v=2.
Subtracting: 7u=7⇒u=1, then v=9−5=4.
u+v=1+4=5
