The number of critical points of the function
f(x)=∣xsinx∣,1,x=0x=0 in the interval (−2π,2π) is equal to :
Solutions · 1
Official solution
First check continuity at x=0:
x→0lim∣xsinx∣=1=f(0)→f(x) is continuous
For x=0, write g(x)=xsinx. Then
Now dxd(xsinx)=x2xcosx−sinx
To find critical points, we look for points in (−2π,2π) where either f′(x)=0 or f′(x) does not exist.
At points where xsinx=0, the absolute value does not create a corner, so we can use g′(x)=0 to get stationary points:
⇒f′(x)=0⇒tanx=x
The equation tanx=x has 3 solutions in (−2π,2π) (one is x=0, and one each in (π,23π) and (−23π,−π)):
Next, f′(x) does not exist at the zeros of ∣xsinx∣, because ∣⋅∣ creates a sharp corner when the inside changes sign. Here sinx=0 gives x=±π (and ±2π etc.). In the open interval (−2π,2π), only x=−π and x=π lie inside.
So we have 3 critical points from tanx=x, and 2 more critical points where f′(x) does not exist at x=−π,π.
