Let line L:1x−1=2y=1z−1, point P(1,2,a).
L1:3x−1=4y−2=bz−a=λ1,L2:1x−1=4y−2=cz−a=λ2.
Aany point Q on L is (t+1,2t,t+1).
Let Q1(t1+1,2t1,t1+1) be point on L and d1 be the distance measured from P(1,2,a) along L1 such that ∣PQ1∣=d1.
So, direction ratio of PQ1→← and line L1 are proportional.
Direction ratio of PQ1→←=Q1−P=(t1+1,2t1,t1+1)−(1,2,a)=(t1,2t1−2,t1+1−a)
Direction ratio of L1=(3,4,b).
So,
3t1=42t1−2=bt1−a+1
Equating
3t1=42t1−23t1=bt1−a+14t1=6t1−6 and put t1=3t1=3 and 33=b3−a+1⇒a+b=4\ldots \ldots .(1)
Similarly, let Q2(t2+1,2t2,t2+1) be point on L and d2 be the distance measured from P(1,2,a) along L2 such that ∣PQ2∣=d2.
so, direction ratio of PQ2→← and d2 are proportional.
direction ratio of PQ→←,
=Q2−P=(t2+1,2t2,t2+1)−(1,2,a)=(t2,2t2−2,t2+1−a)
Direction ratio of L2=(1,4,c).
1t2=42t2−2=ct2+1−a
Equating
1t2=42t2−21t2=ct2+1−a4t2=2t2−2 and put t2=−12t2=−2 and 1−1=c−1+1−a⇒−1=c−a⇒a=c ........(2)
Now, calculating
d21=∣PQ1∣2=t21+(2t1−2)2+(t1+1−a)2,t1=3⇒d21=(3)2+(2×3−2)2+(3+1−a)2=9+16+(4−a)2=25+16+a2−8a=a2−8a+41
Similarly,
d22=∣PQ2∣2=t22+(2t2−2)2+(t2+1−a)2⇒{d}_{2}^{2}=(-1{)}^{2}+(2\times (-1)-2{)}^{2}+(-1+1-a{)}^{2}{ use {t}_{2}=-1}⇒d22=1+16+a2=17+a2
It is given that ∣PQ1∣=∣PQ2∣⇒d21=d22⇒a2−8a+41=17+a2⇒−8a+41=17⇒8a=41−17=24⇒a=3
from (1) \& (2)
b=4−a=4−3=1c=a=3
So value of a+b+c=3+1+3=7
